Co-written and performed by Cam Bina and Alex Riegelman, “Waiting to Receive '' captures the joy of two best friends in harmony with each other. The energy of these longtime collaborators, captured through a live duet vocal recording with a single mic, flows with a relaxed ease throughout the song despite the tightness of their performances and arrangements. Engineered/mixed by Jeff Olsen at his Austin, Texas home studio, Olsen also lends his well renowned drumming and percussion musical talents to the collaboration. With vibraphones at the beginning, the vibe is set for this catchy 50’s esque tune, while Olsen’s pocket drumming drives the groove of the song as it rides out the dynamic changes. Overall, the song retains the quirkiness and the “don’t take yourself so seriously” attitude both artists share. Their shared perspective is on display in the themes found in the lyrics, with the verses taking examples of “common wisdom” and turning them on their head in a tongue-in-cheek fashion. In the chorus is a meditation on delayed gratification, the bliss of not knowing what will happen next. Finally impressing upon the listener in the bridges, that in the end, we only have each other and that’s enough. Cover artist Amber McCall’s vibrant and playful period piece illustration sums it up perfectly; two friends eagerly awaiting a fresh pie to cool before enjoying it together.
